According to the Hindus, Akshaya Tritiya is the day when the God of Wisdom, Lord Ganesha, started writing the epic “Mahabharata”. It is believed that when the Pandavas were in exile, the Lord gave them a bowl which was named Akshaya Tritiya. The bowl was never empty and produced unlimited food.

Akshaya Tritiya which will be celebrated on 7th of May is considered as the most auspicious day of the year because the word Akshaya means the most “Eternal”. Any initiative taken on the day or anything bought on this day is considered to be good fortune. Buying of gold is considered to be favourable and it is believed to be a sign of good fortune for the buyer. Weddings, new business, new venture, everything that is done on this day is very prosperous. It was also believed that people born in that month when Akshay Tritiya comes, are very lucky and have a bright future.

The most popular story about the celebration of Akshaya Tritiya is that Lord Krishna had a friend Sudama during his childhood. Sudama was very poor and he once went to Krishna to get some financial help. Sudama did not have anything to give to Lord Krishna except the pouch of Poha. He felt ashamed but gave the Poha to Lord Krishna. Sudama was so overwhelmed by the hospitality shown by Lord Krishna that he could not ask him for financial support and thus he went home empty-handed. When he reached home, he saw that his hut was transformed into a palace. Sudama knew that this was all because of his friend Krishna who blessed him with more wealth than he needed. So due to this fact, Akshaya Tritiya is associated with material gains.
