This festival marks the commencement of the Tamil New Year. The day starts with kanni where at the dawn, all the families place a large mirror and a tray filled with tropical fruits, coconut, gold ornaments, fruits, cash, beetle leaves, and other auspicious things is put in front of it. The most famous delicacy of this festival is maanga pachadi, a sweet-bitter-sour chutney made with raw mango, jaggery, and neem flower.
